5. Dying: Reborn

Genre: Publisher: Oasis Games
Format: North America (PSN), Europe (PSN)

Dying: Reborn PS Vita

Dying: Reborn is a first-person horror puzzle adventure which tells the story of Mathew who gets locked up in a hotel in search for his sister Shirley. The game is divided into 6 chapters, each of them having more or less difficult puzzles to solve.

The graphic style reminds a bit of the Silent Hill series but the game never creates the same fear experience. Most of the puzzles are quite logic and enjoyable, only a few of them can get frustrating. Cutscenes are fully English voiced and although there are a few sound issues, this fits the game’s dark setting.

4. Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey

Genre: Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Format: North America (PSN), Europe (PSN)

Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey PS Vita

The Atelier series is back with Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey. This new adventure follows the story of Firis who wants to leave her home mining town to explore the outer world. The game features new characters like Liane and Lukas but also sees the return of Sophie and Plachta from Atelier Sophie.

Atelier Firis is the first open world RPG where you explore a bigger world compared to the previously titles of the series. The first chapter in the mining town runs technically quite bad with very low frame rates. But luckily, beginning with the outer world, the game runs fine.

Atelier Firis adds neat new features to the Atelier series, like the traveling Atelier or the flying broom which speeds up traveling between locations. Overall, the game can be recommended to newcomers and to veterans of the series.

3. Toukiden 2

Genre: Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Format: North America (Retail, PSN), Europe (Retail, PSN)

Toukiden 2 PS Vita

Toukiden 2 is the follow up to Toukiden: The Age of Demons and is set in a huge open world divided into six distinct ages. The story follows the events after Toukiden: Kiwami where a disaster known as the Awakening has destroyed the world and a new history with evil spirits began to devour.

New in Toukiden 2 is the demon hand which lets you attack Oni with a giant hand. You can also use it to destroy objects which block your way or to jump to other located areas. Like in the previous games, special skills are granted with equipped Mitama which are souls of former heroes that have been imprisoned by Oni.

The art style of the game is absolutely beautiful and both warriors and Oni do look great. Unfortunately, due to the open world aspect of the game, the graphics of the PS Vita version have been a bit downgraded compared to the previous titles with less detailed environment textures, but it’s still impressive.

1. Salt and Sanctuary

Genre: Publisher: Ska Studios
Format: North America (PSN), Europe (PSN)

Salt and Sanctuary PS Vita

Finally, the 2D Dark Souls clone Salt and Sanctuary has arrived on the PS Vita and yes, the long wait was worth it. The game is set on a mysterious island where you fight hordes of drowned men and their powerful lords with just one goal, to save the princess.

When you fight enemies, you get salt which you can use to level up or to upgrade your weapons. Like in Dark Souls, you will lose it when you die but you can retrieve it when you go back to place of your death. The game features lots of weapons and you will encounter many boss fights only some of them can be a bit frustrating.

The game’s level design is awesome and the atmosphere is very intense as you always might encounter your next death. Although Salt and Sanctuary is quite challenging and unforgiving, it never gets boring as you always can try different equippment and there is lots of them.

Salt and Sanctuary plays and feels great on the PS Vita and Sickhead Games, the studio responsible for the PS Vita port, did a great job. The game runs smooth most of the time, only in some regions the game can stutter a bit, but it never hinders the gameplay.
